MySpace in move to protect copyright

October 30, 2006

MySpace are due to announce a partnership with a little known company Gracenote to apply some copyright filtering to videos added to users MySpace pages. This will at least allow MySpace to look proactive in these times of much talk about copyright infringement and how to get around it (they can thank YouTube for that becoming such an issue).

Gracenote have technology that helps to verify the contents of a CD/DVD. I’m guessing this is going to work in a similar way to how I imagine Google may implement a ‘Neven Vision‘ style anti-copyright system in YouTube.

No news on any sort of revenue sharing ideas from MySpace though, they purely say they will remove anything in breach of copyright. A little short sighted, they should try to hold on to that content at all costs as it is one of the key drivers of traffic to their site.
