Universal Music sues MySpace over copyright!

November 17, 2006

Apparently Universal Music Group has filed a suit against MySpace for copyright infringement of what they say amounts to thousands of its artists works. The suits been filed at the U.S District Court in the Central District of California, Western Division.

Universal have claimed that MySpace had not only allowed users to upload videos illegally but had also played a part in the copyright infringement by the way they re-format videos to be compatible with the MySpace player and to make it easy for people to play back and share with others. I say video but with the meagre details available the suit could involve music too.

I never thought MySpace would be the first to be sued but in this case YouTube has of course signed a deal with Universal already. I wonder if more media companies will take this as an opportunity to pile the pressure on MySpace and file suits of their own?
