YouTube allowing copyright holders to filter comments

December 11, 2006

The NY Times is reporting that YouTube has allowed CBS to move and filter some of the comments tagged to it’s copyrighted video clips. A lot of the comments have been moved to the main comment page, thus making them invisible while the clip is being watched. Of course the most positive comments remain on the main clip page…

Apparently other copyright holders are also moving comments down to the next page. Makes sense for these brands to try to dissassociate themselves from the more colourful comments.

Does beg the question about what’s next though… Maybe CBS will be able to move the more colourful clips in the comedy listings so they don’t appear next to their shows? Or maybe they will fudge the ratings for their clips (controversial…).

Just another sign of the gradual policing of YouTube!
