Person of the year 2006? That’s You that is!

December 17, 2006

Time Magazine have announced their Person of the Year 2006. In recent years the winners have been Bill and Melinda Gates, Bono and President Bush (what for I’ll never fathom). However this year they’ve broken the mould and gone with a far less obvious candidate.

You, yes that’s right, all of you out there have won this year (no prizes I’m afraid). I quote ‘…for seizing the reins of the global media, for founding and framing the new digital democracy, for working for nothing and beating the pros at their own game, TIME’s Person of the Year for 2006 is you.

So what have You won it for if that quote doesn’t make it any clearer? Why for the exponential growth of user generated content on the internet that’s why. Time namechecks all the usual suspects, YouTube, Facebook, MySpace and Wikipedia and even mentions Web 2.0. One could be a sceptic and say they’re jumping on the bandwagon, but whether they are or not I happen to think it’s deserved. Blogging gets a mention too.

A great bit of PR for YouTube and the likes as well and yet another example of the public taking the reigns of digital media and making it into what they want it to be!
